Botsa Satyanarayana: Chandrababu Naidu has rights on corruption

Botsa Satyanarayana.

Hyderabad: PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana alleged that TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu alone has a patent on corruption.

The PCC chief said he will make public his assets on January 3. Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday, Satyanarayana condemned the remarks made by Naidu on AICC president Sonia Gandhi.

On a caustic note, the PCC chief said Naidu is the one who has encouraged corruption; he has looted public money by making a  business of politics.

When  corruption charges were levied against him he went to the court and got stay orders, Satyanarayana said adding that everyone is asking how a man who owned only two acres of land has earned Rs 2,000 crore and acquired huge properties.

The PCC chief said it is surprising that such a person promises to eradicate corruption in the country.

Satyanarayana reminded that it is the  Congress that has passed the Lok Pal Bill. The PCC chief accused some members of the media belonging to a particular community who are trying their best to ensure that Naidu is the next chief minister.

But Naidu has lost his credibility amongst the people.

Satyanarayana said media hype and playing mind games will not help bring Naidu success in the forthcoming elections.

Government chief whip Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy said Naidu should remember that he was the one who introduced corruption in state politics and it is ironical that he is the one accusing Congress chief and others of corruption.

Google partners with Audi to develop in-car infotainment systems

Washington: Google has reportedly joined hands with carmaker Audi to develop in-car entertainment and information systems that would function on the search giant's Android operating system.

The partnership is expected to be announced next week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and its aim is to allow for in-car integration of music and navigation apps currently available on smartphones.

According to Cnet, the collaboration is expected to challenge Apple's iOS in the Car, which aims to integrate users' iPhones with their car's onboard receiver or 'infotainment' system.

The tech giant has so far signed up such automakers as BMW, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari, Hyundai, Kia, and Infiniti to integrate more iOS features into their cars.

However, unlike Apple's OS, which requires and iOS device, the Google's Android-power system would run on the vehicle's built-in hardware.

The report added that rival Apple's infotainment system for cars is expected to kick off as soon as 2014 and could begin appearing in select 2015 models.

Sending vulgar messages, pictures amounts to outraging modesty: HC

Chandigarh: Sending vulgar messages and posting objectionable photographs of young girls on internet tantamount to outraging modesty of woman, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has observed while denying anticipatory bail to an accused. It said such incidents have been "tremendously increasing day-by-day, ruining the social fabric of our society" and need "to be curbed with heavy hands".

The observation was made by Justice Mehinder Singh Sullar while hearing an anticipatory bail plea of Adarsh Singh who was booked by Amritsar police along with another co-accused on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and other offences under the IPC and the Information Technology Act, 2000 on April 24 last year.

Rejecting the anticipatory bail plea of the accused, the Judge observed "the learned state counsel has also produced on record the copies of vulgar messages, notes, abuses and objectionable photographs. The abuses and messages etc which were sent by the accused to the complainant, are so vulgar, that it is very difficult to describe them in black and white and the same have been kept in a sealed cover".

There is prima facie sufficient evidence on record to support the allegations assigned to the accused, he noted.

The prosecution had claimed that the marriage of complainant was scheduled to be solemnised on November 28 last year. "The petitioner has sent very vulgar messages to her and her other relatives for the purpose of extortion.

He has blackmailed her by projecting and displaying her objectionable photographs on internet. The complainant did not delete and saved the messages in her mobile phone as a matter of proof," the Judge noted. The investigating officer obtained the details of messages and photographs of the complainant displayed on the internet and obtained arrest warrants against the petitioner.

"Perhaps, it cannot possibly be denied that, the tendency and frequency of sending such vulgar messages and projecting the objectionable photographs on internet of innocent young girls by such accused, have been tremendously increasing day-by-day, ruining the social fabric of our society, which needs to be curbed with heavy hands," the Judge said. The order came in December.

Daggubati couple may join BJP, says Venkaiah Naidu

D. Purandeswari.

Hyderabad: Significantly, there were speculations over an unnamed Union minister from the state who, according to veteran BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu, was willing to join the BJP.

The name of Union minister D. Purandeswari topped the guess list, given her husband Daggubati Venkateswara Rao’s brief stint in the party and continued relationship with the RSS.

“We thought it could be Purandeswari,” a senior BJP leader said, adding that the BJP was working hard to win the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat because of its pan-India electorate which, according to the party, is swayed by the Modi wave.

The BJP, sources said, will press for the Guntur Lok Sabha seat in case the alliance with the Telugu Desam comes through. Noted industrialist Prabhakar Chowdary of Nuzividu Seeds is already tipped to be the party candidate from Guntur. He made elaborate arrangements in Guntur recently for the BJP-sponsored ‘Run for Unity’.

“It is doubtful if the TD will concede both the Guntur and Narasaraopet seats from where Sambasiva Rao is hoping to try his luck,” said a senior TD leader.

Rajagopal set his eyes on Eluru as the TD categorically made it clear that it will not forgo Vijayawada from where he has won twice.

Nani of Kesineni Private Travels is the strong contender for the Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat.

Rajahmundry Congress MP Vundavilli Arun Kumar may not hav a vacancy in the BJP because the TD will not lose the seat to the alliance. Actor Murali Mohan who narrowly lost to Arun Kumar is keen on winning this time.

Centre clears Tesco’s retail plan

New Delhi: The Foreign Investment Promotion Board on Monday approved UK-based Tesco Plc’s proposal to enter the Indian multi-brand retail segment in joint venture with Tata Group company with an initial investment of $110 million (about Rs 680 crore).

Tesco proposal entailing investment of $110 million has been cleared, sources said after the FIPB meeting held here.

After the approval, Tesco will pick up a 50 per cent stake in Trent Hypermarket Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Trent Ltd, a Tata group company. Tesco is the first global retailer to apply for multi- brand retailing after the government allowed 51 per cent FDI in the segment in September last year.

Trent Hypermarket runs 16 outlets in the southern and western regions with support from Tesco. The UK retailer plans to sell 14 categories of products, official sources said.

The items to be sold at its stores include tea, coffee, vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, dairy products, wine, liquor, textiles, footwear, furniture, electronics and jewellery.

The FIPB, headed by economic affairs secr-etary Arvind Mayaram, considered 12 items including Tesco’s FDI proposal. India allows FDI in most of the sectors through automatic route, government approval is required in certain sectors sensitive for the economy.

Reacting to the FIPB nod to the $110-million proposal in the Indian multi-brand retail segment  that will allow Tesco to work on practicalities of setting up a joint venture with Tata group firm Trent, UK-based Tesco said:“Tesco is pleased that the FIPB has agreed to our proposal. This will now allow us to work on the practicalities of setting up the joint venture with Trent. Any such announcement will be made in the usual way."

Now bitcoin malwares target personal computers

New Delhi: Bitcoin craze is turning into a fertile ground for cyber fraudsters as thousands of computers, including in India, are being infected with malwares related to the virtual currency.

The findings of a survey, that has pegged the count of computers infected with bitcoin related malware at at least 12,000, comes at a time when regulators worldwide have flagged money laundering concerns about this popular virtual currency.

IT security firm Trend Micro, a 'bitcoin mining malware' is infecting computers globally leading to increasing threat of cyber security risks for bitcoins users.

India is among the countries that have been hit the most by such malwares, it said.

As per the survey, four out of the six countries that have the highest number of such infected computers are in the the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. Japan was the most affected country with APAC, followed by Australia, India and Taiwan.

"Bitcoin users have become the hot target for cyber criminals as bitcoin transaction is permanent and has no reversal of charges," Trend Micro Managing Director (India & SAARC) Dhanya Thakkar said.

About 12,000 personal computers have been globally affected by malwares (related to bitcoin) which were causing severe slowdown of computer systems making them "virtual assets for the criminals," it added.

"Although bitcoin is claimed to be anonymous, the transaction records are still in public and it leave traces... Consequently, given enough circumstantial evidence, criminals can identify and obtain the owners personal information," Trend Micro said.

Thakkar noted that there is no regulator or authority that bitcoin users can appeal to if they fall victim to theft or fraud. Going by estimates, as many as 67 digital currencies are in circulation on the Internet and their total value is around USD 13 billion. Out of this amount, bitcoin alone accounts for over USD 9 billion.

2014 to usher in new face as PM after LS polls

Chennai: A new person will become the Prime Minister of India after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which will also see the rout of the Congress.

Also, stability woes will haunt the new government in the national capital till June in the New Year, according to noted astrologer Yadartha Jothidar Sehlvi.

The Congress will face troubled times and its leader Rahul Gandhi, who has a role in the future, may not make it to the Prime Minister’s post, he says. “The year 2014 will see a ‘new face’ become the Prime Minister,” Sehlvi adds.

The year comes under the influence of (planet) Ketu. Its number is 7. It will be in Aries till June 22 and afterwards, transit to Pisces and remain there throughout the year, he said, explaining the planetary positions.

Planet Saturn will be in Libra and Jupiter will transit to Cancer from Gemini in June. The yearly general predictions will be made according to these planetary positions.

“The year 2014 is not a good period for agriculture. So, the government should concentrate on preserving agricultural produce. Blackmarketing of foodgrains will increase, weather forecast will be misleading and bacterial infections and new disease outbreak will cause concern in the nation. Most of all, political instability will prevail till June and after June 22 the government will become stable. Unexpected happenings will occur much to the pleasant surprise of the government and these new occurrences will make the new government happy,” he says.

Judgments would be delivered against corruption cases and also cases pertaining to crime against women and children. Good laws will be enacted and women’s reservation bill will be passed.

“This is so because Ketu has the power to ensure a lot of good things for women. So, safety of women and children would be highlighted and this is indicated for this year. Also, the government will come forward to improve cleanliness, roads and impose penalty on the wrong-doers. Ketu is the Lord for purity and divinity. He will guide people to God by creating travails. Only troubles make one realise God."

Destruction of natural resources is the main cause for natural disasters, so laws to prevent plundering of natural resources will be passed.

Since Ketu could be controlled by Lord Ganesh, people should worship Lord Vinayaka from January 1 onwards. But, one must not ignore one’s family deity.

So, regular worship of Lord Ganesh and family deity will yield beneficial results.

Generally, 2014 will be a troublesome period. There are likely to be natural disasters, sea level may rise, cyclones, fires, industrial fire and negligence may happen.

Terrorist activities may cause more trouble. We should be careful in all things during a Ketu year. Those in authority should take precautions to protect people, he elaborated.

Ketu is gnanakarakan. He will first inflict troubles and then bestow knowledge. He will introduce sorrows to infuse faith in God.

A person who is happy will not go to the temple. Ketu is the main power forcing people to undergo struggles to seek divine intervention.

He is likely to create problems for the country through the neighbours. Border areas will become a big problem for India.

So, the government has to put the military on high alert and put in place a strategy to overcome the problems posed by the neighbouring countries.

AK Antony calls for unity in Congress

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress in the state has begun preparing for the elections with a call for party unity by Defence Minister A.K. Antony and the ground being prepared for Ramesh Chennithala to join the Oommen Chandy government.

At the same time, the draft election manifesto prepared by the KPCC has suggested giving ‘relief to the kitchen’ by providing 12 LPG cylinders to all the families at subsidised rates.

Antony urged the Congress leaders and the government to work unitedly in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He asked the party leaders to settle the differences of opinion within the party itself without allowing them to reach dangerous levels.

He was addressing the party workers after receiving a copy of the election manifesto prepared by the three-member sub-committee set up by the KPCC.

Antony warned that if partymen can’t remain united, they should get ready to perish.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala may join the Chandy government to try to avoid a drubbing for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

Warning KPCC leaders who are embroiled in group politics, Antony said that if they remained united, they could reap rich dividends.

The problems in the party should be  solved collectively. “Unity is important for strengthening the party. If we move unitedly, the New Year will be the party’s. The party should create a conducive environment to face the New Year challenges,” he said.

When reporters asked him about the possibility of Chennithala  joining the cabinet, he said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Chennithala were the apt persons to answer it.

Congress sources told DC that it is with this agenda that Chennithala has been trying to bring in  many leaders of ‘I’ camp  to the KPCC executive before January 10.

The highlight of the KPCC’s manifesto prepared by KPCC general secretaries Dr Sooranad Rajasekharan, Satheeshan Pacheni and Sajeev Joseph is ‘relief to the kitchen.’

All the families will be given 12 LPG cylinders at Rs 500 per cylinder in a year.

It will also be ensured that cylinders are delivered to the consumers within seven days of the date of booking.

Another recommendation is that the government should  regulate the prices  of petrol and diesel. Also, all the families whose monthly income is less than Rs 10, 000 and who own a two-wheeler should be given 10 litres of petrol in a month at 25 percent below market price.

Telangana heats up President’s winter stay

Hyderabad: President Pranab Mukherjee was flooded with petitions to expedite the Telangana process.

A 38-member delegation of Telangana Joint Action Committee, led by Prof. Kodandaram, and a nine-member delegation, led by CPI state council secretary Dr K. Narayana,

former PCC president D. Srinivas and others met the President on Monday.

T-supporters thanked the President for sending the draft of the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Bill-2013 to the state Assembly for its opinion, and requested him

to speed up the T-process.

They complained against Seemandhra MLAs and MLCs trying to stall the proceedings, disallowing a discussion as per the constitutional norms and disrespecting him.

The President accepted the memoranda submitted by TJAC and the CPI.

Ever since the President arrived in Hyderabad on his 12-day southern sojourn on December 20, he has been flooded with representations from anti-and pro-Telangana

groups making his trip a T-affair.

Members of the various delegations who met the President said the President did not offer any comment  on the issue.

The President had a meeting with Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Leader of Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, former PCC chief, D. Srinivas among others.

Notwithstanding opposition from people of Seemandhra to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to form Telangana, the Centre is sticking to the schedule. So, it means that Telangana will be born during the Winter Session in December.<br /> Notwithstanding opposition from people of Seemandhra to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to form Telangana, the Centre is sticking to the schedule. So, it means that Telangana will be born during the Winter Session in December. The same has been confirmed by Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who said: "I am telling you today that the Telangana Bill will be introduced in the Winter session, there is no change in that."<br /> The same has been confirmed by Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who said: "I am telling you today that the Telangana Bill will be introduced in the Winter session, there is no change in that." The Group of Ministers, which has discussed pros and cons of a new state, will put the Bill together by November 20 and it will be sent to the Cabinet. Among various issues, declaring Hyderabad as the joint capital with jurisdiction and powers enjoyed by both Telangana and Seemandhra governments, without making it Union Territory seems to be the main concern of the GoM as there is still confusion on the status of Hyderabad as the joint capital. The home ministry will submit the Bill indicating recommendations of the GoM to the Cabinet, requesting approval for the state Bill. The Cabinet will recommend to the President Pranab Mukherjee to refer the Bill to the State Legislature and the Ministry of finance to appoint an expert committee to recommend measures for smooth transition. After the President sends it, the State Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council will give their opinion. Though Andhra CM Kiran Kumar Reddy (in pic), who is against the state's division, wanted the Bill to be put to vote, the demand was rejected. Hence the Assembly can only give its views. Will Kiran float a new party? After being passed by both Houses of Parliament, the Bill will be sent to the President for his final assent. The whole process will take over a month. In pics: It takes 7 months Meanwhile, the Congress Core Committee, which includes Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will meet on November 22 to discuss various issues of bifurcation, including the capital. CWC has proposed Hyderabad to be the joint capital of Telangana and Seemandhra for 10 years and A K Antony committee has recommended that revenue of Hyderabad must be shared between the two states. On employment, the GoM held a detailed meeting with Attorney General G. Vahanavati, who has said that Art 371(D) could be amended along with the Telangana Bill by applying the provisions for both the states.Article 371D confers special powers on the state of Andhra Pradesh to provide for equitable opportunities and facilities for people belonging to different parts of the state in the matter of public employment and education. If the Centre decides to do away with 371(D) through a special legislation, it may require a special majority in both Houses of Parliament, but if it is amended as part of the creation of Telangana state and reorganisation of AP State under Art 4, there should not be a problem, the Attorney General seems to have suggested. The GoM has taken into consideration various suggestions by political parties. That included Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who is against the idea of Hyderabad becoming a Union Territory, seeking Urdu as the first language along with Telugu in the new state of Telangana. While the government has decided that Hyderabad would remain the joint capital of Telangana and Seemandhra for 10 years, Telangana Rashtra Samithi wants the new capital for Seemandhra to be ready in two to three years. It wants relocation of all gazetted officers who are wrongly recruited and promoted, in violation of various safeguards provided to Telangana employees.

DC special: Dad rapes schoolgirl, sires 3 kids

Thanjavur: Like most teenagers, Mala (name changed) too had great dreams but they were shattered when her father raped the schoolgirl and made her pregnant. She is 24 now and recently delivered his third child as he repeatedly abused her over the years after drugging her. Her mother had deserted the family long back and the father had remarried.

The rapist, an auto-rickshaw driver, was arrested last month following Mala’s complaint.

Mala and her third child, aged six weeks, are now being taken care of by a kind woman cop and some hospital staff near Thanjavur while the two older kids are with her stepmother.

“I had dreamt of a career in commerce and economics, but fate decided otherwise. My own father destroyed my life and made me mother of his three children. But I am determined to resume studies and stand on my own feet”, Mala told Deccan Chronicle here on Friday. She expressed hope she would get help “from some kind souls, from this society”.

Father warned her of serious harm if she informed anyone

The question that comes to mind as to why Mala (name changed) did not fight back when her father repeatedly raped her and sired three children, and why she did not report him, evaporates when she narrates her scary story.

After the first abuse—she does not want to go into too many details saying it’s “too traumatic to even think leave alone recall in detail”—he threatened her of serious bodily harm if she talked to anyone about it.

On the other hand, he would even allow her to continue studies and pursue her dream of doing a degree in business administration if she cooperated, he told her. And when she resisted, he shaved her head and branded her all over with hot iron, Mala told DC on the sidelines of a ‘public hearing’ on abuse of women and children, organized by All-India Democratic Womens’ Association (AIDWA) here on Friday. “My first child, a boy is now four-years-old. The second is a girl, 2-1/2 years old. He even allowed me to join the BBA course but I had to discontinue when I became pregnant third time.
Throughout my tenure at school and college, I would keep away from classmates and rush back home as otherwise I would be beaten up”, Mala said.

She said her mother had deserted the family and the father remarried. Together, the two subjected her to physical and mental abuse.

To ensure she suffered in silence, her father had even drugged her. After delivering her third child, a boy, last month, Mala left the baby in a church with a note saying she would not be able to take care of the child.

People found the baby crying and saw the note beside him. Police traced Mala at the bus terminus and took the sobbing mother back to the hospital, where she made a detailed statement about her terrible ordeal over the years.

The auto driver was picked up by the police after that and remanded to custody.

A case under various penal sections of law, including rape, physical assault, threat of life and illegal custody, has been registered against the alleged rapist, according to AIDWA officials.
A kind policewoman and some hospital staff are now taking care of Mala and the baby, but they need a better and permanent arrangement.

“It is sad that in this democratic and civilised country, a girl is not safe even in her house”, said AIDWA vice-president U Vasuki.

Telangana bill to be tabled in parliament in February: Reddy

New Delhi: Union Minister Jaipal Reddy on Wednesday said the Telangana statehood bill would be tabled in Parliament in the first week of February.

Briefing reporters here, Reddy, who is a senior Congress leader from Telangana region, said he was confident the bill would be passed.

"I am not only a cabinet minister but also a senior parliamentarian. I have my own assessment," he said. Asked about the change in portfolio of a Andhra Pradesh minister, which has kicked up a political storm in the state, he said any move by the (state) government and the Chief Minister are irrelevant to constitutional process.

"The wisdom of those doing this is limited," he charged without naming Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who effected a minor reshuffle of portfolios by allocating Legislative Affairs to S Sailajanath from Seemandhra region, as an addition to the School Education portfolio he has been holding.

Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu, belonging to Telangana, was divested of the additional portfolio of Legislative Affairs and given charge of Commercial Taxes Department.

The portfolio re-jig seemingly sought to alter the regional equations at a time when the state legislature is set to take up a crucial debate on the draft AP Reorganisation Bill-2013, referred to by the President, from January 3.

Jaipal Reddy sought legislators to express their opinion about the Bill in the assembly. "If you do not discuss, it is the loss of the assembly," he added.

The President had given time till January 23 for the legislature to return the draft bill after due deliberations.

The Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams are central to the Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh. (1 TMC equals 28.3 billion litres). The Nagarjunasagar dam is right on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and caters to the irrigation needs of Andhra and Telangana. Kiran feels the new state would badly hit irrigation projects.Godavari is less exploited as compared with Krishna and most of the water flows into the Bay of Bengal. The Godavari Waters Disputes Tribunal in 1975 awarded 1,480 TMC to Andhra Pradesh, but proponents of separate Telangana are demanding more than 60 pc of that water share. As for agriculture is concerned, Seemandhra regions are better irrigated and account for 60 pc of total crops cultivated in Andhra Pradesh. Telangana has over 65 pc agriculture pumpsets. But with Telangana expected to face at least 40-50 pc power shortage, the irrigation projects will be affected.Currently in Andhra Pradesh, the power generation is only 57 million units per day against a demand of 115 MU. Though Telangana boasts of major coal deposits, Seemandhra has more gas-based stations with higher installed capacity of power. The Ramagundam thermal power station is in Telangana but is controlled by the Centre.Kiran accused TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao of misleading farmers with a promise to bring 10,000 MW from Chhattisgarh since the installed capacity of the neighbouring state was only 6300 MW.Before bifurcating the state, the Centre, Kiran feels, must have clarity on the status of Hyderabad, which several people from Seemandhra made their home after the formation of AP decades ago.Even as APNGO members are protesting against shifting of the secretariat employees to Seemandhra, Kiran rejected the TRS statistics and said out of 18,856 employees identified as non-locals under GO 610, 9,174 were repatriated and 4,062 were exempted as per the rules. As the capital of united AP for nearly 60 years, Hyderabad city has witnessed enormous growth and transformed into a large metropolis. In the process, many other regions of the State have been neglected. People from Andhra and Rayalaseema are heavily dependent on Hyderabad for health facilities, education and employment opportunities.

Glitter nail polish new weapon to protect data

File photo - AP

Washington: Security experts have discovered a new secret weapon to ensure your laptop and other devices are not tampered with - glitter nail polish.

Security researchers Eric Michaud and Ryan Lackey said glitter nail polish can help people know when their machines have been physically tampered with and potentially compromised.

Physical tampering with machines is a growing problem. While drive encryption, strong passwords and software-based measures might keep causal thieves out, travelling offers many ways for prying eyes to physically compromise a laptop, Lackey and Michaud noted.

Many people affix tamper-proof seals over ports and screws but these seals can in fact be replicated or opened cleanly in minutes by anyone with even minimal training, the researchers said during a presentation at the Chaos Communication Congress in Germany.

Glitter nail polish can create a seal that is impossible to copy. Once applied, it has what effectively is a random pattern.

Once painted over screws or onto stickers placed over ports, it is difficult to replicate once broken, 'Wired' magazine reported.

Experts recommend using your smartphone to take a picture of the laptop with the seals applied before leaving it alone, taking another photo upon returning and using a software programme to shift rapidly between the two images to compare them.

Even very small differences - a screw that is in a very slightly different position, or glitter nail polish that has a very slightly different pattern of sparkle – will be evident.

Astronomers use a similar technique called blink comparison to detect small changes in the night sky, researchers said.

CPI to President: More seats needed in Telangana

Hyderabad: The CPI on Monday urged President Pranab Mukherjee to take steps to increase the number of Assembly seats in the new Telangana state to 153 from the present 119 in the T-Bill.

The party also urged the President to add another 50 seats in the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh.

CPI state council secretary Dr K. Narayana, who met the President at Rashtrapathi Nilayam, sought his intervention on the policy of political parties making promises in election manifesto and dumping them subsequently.

Describing the stalling of proceedings on T-Bill in Assembly and Council as undemocratic and unconstitutional, Dr Narayana said these parties were pursuing selfish and opportunistic policies.

The Congress, TD and the YSRC which often declare that they honour Parliamentary democracy but have practically have become a hurdle for the smooth functioning of state Assembly, he charged.

CPI also sought reconstitution of Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal II with a new chairman, setting up of regional development councils in backward Rayalaseema, north

Andhra, and allotment of special funds to backward Mahbubnagar, Anantapur, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Prakasam.

While welcoming Polavaram project as national project, the CPI demanded similar status to Pranahita-Chevella, setting up of inter-state water management boards for the

maintenance of projects & canals with statutory powers, allotment of required gas, oil and coal to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states as per norms prescribed.

“Serious observation be made on a political party which express two opinions in two different regions simultaneously. A political party cannot take different political

lines in and outside legislative bodies. We feel that such unhealthy trends be curtailed by your esteemed intervention for the smooth functioning of the Assembly.

Members should have freedom of expression and come to certain conclusion within stipulated period,”?he said.

Dr Narayana said leaders of these parties who are humiliating the T-Bill had met him.

“We do not know what they had talked to you. But everyone knows what they addressed to the media. Sir, you should take a serious note of what is transpiring in the state Assembly, and find out a scientific solution to the needs of all,”?he added.

Buzz over Vasan-Captain meeting

G. K. Vasan and Vijayakanth. File photo. G. K. Vasan and Vijayakanth. File photo.

Chennai: Amid overtures from DMK and BJP for an alliance with Vijayakanth-led DMDK for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, senior Congress leader and Union minister G. K. Vasan on Tuesday evening met the actor turned politician at his Saligramam residence adding to speculation of electoral tie-up.

While though there is no official confirmation about the meeting which lasted nearly 40 minutes, sources from both parties said that it was only a courtesy call where Vasan met Vijayakanth to extend pleasantries on New Year’s eve.

According to DMDK sources, Vasan discussed the possibility of an alliance with Vijayakanth. Following DMK’s decision to break its alliance, the Congress has been left all alone in the state with no parties showing any interest for an alliance with it. Vasan, who enjoys a good rapport with the actor politician, favours a tie-up with the DMDK for the LS polls, sources said.

After distancing itself from the Congress and BJP, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said that he would be happy to have DMDK in his alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.

DMK also tried to open a channel for negotiation through an emissary Bishop Ezra Sargunam who presided over DMDK’s Christmas celebration at their party headquarters in Koyambedu on December 23.

“I will consider the suggestion made by Ezra Sargunam (about two captains). I will also take into account, most certainly, his advice that I stay away from the BJP,” said Vijayakanth responding to Bishop Sargunam’s advice.

BJP has also been actively wooing the actor’s party to stitch up a grand alliance consisting of PMK and MDMK in the state. A senior DMDK leader said that Vijaykanth would announce any decision on the Lok Sabha polls only after the party’s conference to be held in Villupuram.

Congress fights Katti might in Chikkodi

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurates a Savitha Samaja convention at Town Hall in Bangalore on Monday.	—DC Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurates a Savitha Samaja convention at Town Hall in Bangalore on Monday. —DC

Belgaum: The Congress party is struggling to find a potential candidate in Chikkodi parliamentary constituency from where former Union minister, late B Shankaranand (Congress) had created a record of sorts by winning seven times in a row. After the victory of BJP candidates in the last two parliament polls, the Congress has become weak here.

A section of Congress top leaders are in favour of fielding one of the Jarkiholi brothers of Gokak from Chikkodi to give a tough challenge to sitting MP Ramesh Katti of BJP.

Some Congressmen are rallying behind former minister A.B. Patil and youth leader Amit Kore.

After the death of Shankaranand, BJP's Ramesh Jigajinagi emerged as MP from Chikkodi and later Katti won the seat as the first MP after the reorganisation of constituencies.

Due to his involvement in several cooperative organisations, Katti has emerged as a popular leader in Chikkodi and is certain to be the BJP's candidate.

The Congress has no potential leader other than Lakhan Jarkiholi, youngest of the Jarkiholi brothers from Chikkodi. A.B. Patil, thrice MLA from Hukkeri, Amit Kore, son of Rajya Sabha MP Prabhakar Kore and Omprakash Kanagali, son of Shankaranand  are also in the race for the Congress ticket.

The Jarkiholis are reluctant to contest the elections and are supporting A.B. Patil, according to sources. Minister Prakash Hukkeri from Chikkodi is also backing Patil as Patil and Katti have been traditional political rivals in Chikkodi for a long time.

Although, Amit Kore is an able youth leader, he lacks experience. Some Congress leaders may oppose his candidature because of his father's association with BJP. According to top Congress party sources, the party may delay its announcement in the event of Jarkiholis backing off.

The Chikkodi constituency comprises assembly constituencies of Chyikkodi, Nipani, Hukkeri, Yamkanmardi, Raibag, Athani, Kudchi and Kagwad of which Yamkanmardi and Chikkodi have Congress MLAs.

Violence against women rise in district

Karimnagar: Despite stringent laws being passed in the wake of Delhi gangrape incident, violence against women is on the increase in the district, suggest statistics.

According to figures available with the District Crime Records Bureau (DCRB), a total of 46 rapes and 240 cases of “attempt to rape” were registered at different police stations in the district from January 1 to November 30 as against 41 rapes and 211 cases of attempt to rape in 2012.

The district has been witnessing increasing number of  crimes against women. Prof. Sujata Surepally of Shatavahana University said, “There are multiple factors that contribute to the violence. Mainly, higher rate of migration, poor surveillance, lack of proper mechanism to address  issues related to  women, insensitivity of concerned officials, apart from significant rate of alcohol consumption among men.”

According to  Prof. Sujata, violence against women is  a socio-economic problem. “With most men migrating  to the Gulf and European countries, women are left behind alone.
“It would have been different if  men were  provided with sufficient livelihood here,” added Sujata.

Apart from sexual assaults, eight housewives were allegedly murdered by their in-laws in the last 11 months, whereas  34 dowry deaths were reported across the district during the period.
As many as  588 cases of domestic violence were registered, which is lower than the  previous year.

When contacted, superintendent of police V. Shiva Kumar said, “In addition to the new anti-rape Act, we are invoking provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (PCSOF), 2012 against  persons involved in crimes against women and weaker sections.”

V. Shiva Kumar claimed that the police were in touch with public prosecutor in order to ensure convictions, besides launching rowdy-sheets against those booked under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Group of Ministers, which has discussed pros and cons of a new state, will put the Bill together by November 20 and it will be sent to the Cabinet.

Microsoft Word has an Assamese clone

Itanagar: A group of volunteers from different parts of Assam have made an innovation of sorts by designing an Assamese word processor similar to the Microsoft Word with a spell checker and word suggestions to boot.

Named Jahnabi, the word processor has came as a boon for those who need help in writing the language and can be easily used by those with a rudimentary knowledge of Assamese.

"The website www.jahnabi.org has received more than 60,000 hits and the free-of-cost software downloaded by more than 1,000 people since it was launched online on November 25 last," says Mridul Kumar Sharmah, one of the members of the team.

The Unicode compliant software with a size of 7 mega bytes has at present nearly 2.5 lakh Assamese words and 108 readymade Assamese phrases in its dictionary and counting.

"The programming of the processor is based on dotnet platform and C# language containing around 15,000 lines of code," Utpal Phukon, the only programmer in the Jahnabi team, said.

It took almost 25 days to complete the beta version of the software and the final software was designed in four months, he said. The software contains automatic suggestions for words. Just type the alphabet K and all the words beginning with Ka would appear like Kalam and Kamal.

There are also 600 Assamese idioms. The user has the option to create a shortcut for frequently used idioms. There is also a facility to add words to the user’s dictionary. "If one types the alphabets K and M, words like Kamal and Kamtapur would be listed. All one has to do is click on the word which is required from the list. This makes it easy for people who do not have an in-depth knowledge of the language," Sharmah said.

Inflation limiting RBI's ability to boost growth: Raghuram Rajan

New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said the challenge of containing inflation is limiting the central bank's ability to boost economic growth, while urging the government to continue with fiscal consolidation to support the economy.

The comments were included in the foreword of the central bank's financial stability report published on Monday, which comes after the RBI surprised investors by keeping interest rates unchanged this month after raising them by a total of 50 basis points in September and in October.

Analysts say the RBI could resume tightening monetary policy by early next year should inflation remain high, even as the economy is growing below the decade low of 5 percent posted in the fiscal year ending in March.

The report also reiterated the RBI's previously stated concerns about the level of bad assets in the banking sector, while noting a corporate "failure" could trigger contagion in the interlinked banking system.

"The outlook for the economy has improved, with export growth regaining momentum, but growth is still weak," Rajan wrote.

"The challenges of containing inflationary pressures limit what monetary policy can do."

The RBI report also called the "fall in domestic savings and relatively high fiscal deficit" as other key concerns for the Indian economy.

The government is expected to slash spending to meet a fiscal deficit target of 4.8 percent of gross domestic product for the year ending in March.

Rajan urged the government to continue to push through policy reforms and fiscal consolidation, while noting the prospect of a divided verdict in general elections due by May was creating investor uncertainty.

"Policy certainty is something investors look for in the current environment," Rajan wrote in his foreword.

"A stable new government would be positive for the economy," he added.

Nandan Nilekani logs into politics

Bangalore: The first real confirmation that Nandan Nilekani, one of the city’s most remarkable IT success stories, is going to dive head into the political world has come.

DC poll: Should Nandan Nilekani take the plunge into politics?

Karnataka PCC President G. Parameshwar said that the co-founder of IT bellwether Infosys and the head of UIDAI had 'expressed his intent', to contest Lok Sabha polls on the prestigious Congress ticket from Bangalore South constituency, when they met in Delhi.

“People like Nilekani expressing their intent to become a Congress candidate is something we feel really happy about,” Parameswhar said.

His cautious note of optimism belies the huge expectations that rest with Nilekani’s candidature in a seat won by BJP stalwart Ananth Kumar five times in a row, and in a climate created by the advent of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), that has set off a clamour for candidates with a clean, apolitical track record.

There is intense speculation that Nilekani, not a primary member of the party but a part of UPA2 for the last four years, could even be named as the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress party.

Investors get richer by Rs 1 trillion

Mumbai: Stock market investors became richer by over Rs 1 lakh crore in 2013, as a 9 per cent rally in the benchmark Sensex helped total valuation of all listed firms rise to Rs 70,44,431 crore at the end of a volatile year.

Those contributing the most to the stock market wealth includes Tata group firm TCS, the country’s most valued firm, as also entities like Infosys, Wipro, Tata Motors and Maruti.

In 2013, shares of TCS shot-up by over 71 per cent, while Infosys gained 51 per cent, Wipro (40 per cent), Tata Motors (20 per cent) and Maruti Suzuki (19.33 per cent).

This was the third consecutive year of rise in investor wealth, where Dalal Street investors became richer by Rs 1,22,616 crore to Rs 70,44,431 crore.

In 2013, the benchmark Sensex rose by 8.97 per cent and recorded a new intra-day high of 21,483.74 on December 9.

The 30-share gauge ended the year on a flat note at 21,170.68, up 27.67 points. The broader CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also firmed up by 12.90 points or 0.21 per cent to end at 6,304.00. It has risen by 398.90 points or 6.76 per cent for the year 2013.

The rise in investor wealth was also due to continued rise in the number of listed firms. At present, the total number of listed companies stands at 5,295.

Market experts attributed rise in investor wealth to robust FII inflows and hopes of wider reforms after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections helped to overcome concerns over slowing economic growth and high inflation.

“This year turned out to be quite constructive for Indian equity. Markets made fresh life time highs on the back of improving domestic macros, supportive global equity and expected governance improvement in India after next general elections.

“Sensex crossed the level of 21,200 after a gap of almost six years. FII reaffirmed their commitment towards Indian equities with more than $20 billion invested in 2013,” said Varun Goel, Head PMS, Karvy Stock Broking.

IT, pharma, FMCG, auto and oil&gas sector registered sharp to moderate gains while realty, consumer durable, power, metal, capital goods and banking posted losses this year.

Michael Schumacher in critical condition after skiing accident

Paris:  Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher was in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery following a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday, doctors said.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center said the retired racing driver arrived at the clinic in a coma and underwent immediate surgery for a serious head trauma.

It was not clear whether the 44-year-old Schumacher was still in a coma but the hospital statement, which was signed by a neurosurgeon, an anesthesiologist and Marc Penaud, the hospital's deputy director, said ``he remains in a critical condition.''

Schumacher fell while skiing off-piste in Meribel earlier on Sunday and hit his head on a rock, according to a statement from the resort. Resort managers said he had been wearing a helmet and was conscious when rescuers first responded to the scene.

Earlier in the day, the Meribel resort said Schumacher had been taken to Grenoble for tests and authorities said his life was not in danger.

But the situation began to appear more serious when the resort said that orthopedic and trauma surgeon Gerard Saillant had traveled from Paris to the hospital in Grenoble to examine Schumacher. German news agency dpa said it was Saillant who operated on Schumacher when he broke his leg during a crash at the Silverstone race course in 1999.

In an email to The Associated Press, Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said the champion German driver was on a private skiing trip and ``fell on his head.''

``We ask for understanding that we cannot give running updates on his condition. He wore a helmet and was not alone,'' Kehm said. Schumacher's 14-year-old son was skiing with his father when the accident happened, the resort said.

As news of the accident spread, Formula One drivers used social media to wish Schumacher a quick recovery.

His former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, who recovered from life-threatening injuries sustained at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009, wrote on Instagram: ``I am praying for you my brother!! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you Michael.''

The Twitter feed of Germany's Adrian Sutil, who drives for Sauber, read: ``I hope Michael Schumacher will get well soon! All my best to him and his family.'' Romain Grosjean of Lotus tweeted: ``All our thoughts to Schumi and his family! Hope you will recover soon (hash)legend (hash)Schumi.''

Support also came from leading German sports personalities, ranging from the NBA to soccer. Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki said his thoughts were with Schumacher, while Lukas Podolski, who plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League, tweeted: ``Bad news from Switzerland: please get well soon, Michael Schumacher. All the best for you, my friend! (hash)getwellsoon (hash)MichaelSchumacher.''

In addition to the crash at Silverstone, Schumacher was hurt seriously in a motorcycling accident in February 2009 in Spain when he suffered neck and spine injuries. He recovered sufficiently from those injuries to make a comeback in F1.

Schumacher initially retired from F1 in 2006 after winning five straight titles with Ferrari following two earlier ones with Benetton. He returned to the sport in 2010 and drove for three seasons for Mercedes without much success before retiring again last year.

Moulson reported from Berlin. AP Sports Writer Nesha Starcevic in Frankfurt contributed to this report.

BJP hopes to ride Modi wave to Parliament from Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The BJP appears to be no longer an outcaste in Tamil Nadu politics and with the increase in its stock, the saffron party need not have the sinking feeling of going solo in the Lok Sabha elections next year.

Despite lacking the traditional vote bank, compared to the major Dravidian parties that have created these over the years, the BJP here hopes to ride on the Modi wave to Parliament from here.

As the party steps into 2014, it cannot forget the shock over the killing of two of its leaders within a year, including state general secretary V. Ramesh.

It hopes to make it to the national capital thanks to its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi who set the ball rolling by addressing a massive conference at Tiruchy.

The party is confident of winning a good number of seats on its own, and also with the help of the PMK, which could help in garnering Vanniyar votes, and the MDMK, too, by whipping up Tamil sentiments.

Another significant player, actor-politician Vijayakanth, is likely to join the BJP camp soon, says a senior leader in the party.

The southern states could help the party reach the magic number of 272+ seats that it requires on its own, and the alliance that it cobbles together would ensure the formation of the government after the general elections in 2014, feels the think-tank in the party.

The BJP believes that it can reclaim its footprints in the region and even expand through its allies.

It hopes to win more numbers in addition to Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Tirupur and the Nilgiris Lok Sabha constituencies that the BJP had won in the 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha polls.

Presently, the rank and file of the party is going from village to village, highlighting Modi’s achievements, Congress misrule, need for a regime change at the Centre, besides popularising the lotus symbol, through its novel campaign: Veeduthorum Modi, Ullamthorum Thamarai (Modi in every household and lotus in every heart).

Through this padayatra, targeting to cover about 12,618 village panchayats, the party hopes to get closer to people, especially the rural voters, in the state with the hope of a breakthrough in the state. Saffron party, once an also-ran in the state, is no more a political outcaste.

CBI examines Arun Jaitley letter against HP CM

New Delhi: The CBI on Tuesday maintained that the agency is examining the letter written by BJP leader Arun Jaitley levelling corruption allegations against Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Sources said the agency had already included the allegations levelled against Singh in a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) registered last year at the request of the State Trading Corporation (STC) which had called for a CBI probe.

Amidst the allegation by BJP of taking bribe, Virbhadra Singh arrived here on Tuesday to present his version to the Congress high command. He slammed the opposition party of indulging in “malicious propaganda” against him and his family.

He is expected to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and possibly Rahul Gandhi to explain his position in the matter. The CBI may also seek clarification from Singh.

While insisting that he had taken no bribe, Singh on Tuesday issued an eight-page statement seeking to rebut Jaitley’s charges point by point.

“Frustrated BJP leaders are fabricating false stories and twisting and tampering facts to suit their convenience. They have been waging the same old issues pertaining to my income tax return and loan taken by my family, which have been replied and clarified time and again and there is nothing material or new in them,” Singh said.

Jaitley dares Virbhadra to file a defamation case

BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Tuesday dared Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra to file a defamation case against him for alleging that he had taken bribe from a private power company and said he would cross examine him in court on each of the charges.

“Virbhadra Singh has said that he would consider filing a defamation action against me. He is certainly entitled to do so. In that event I would be pleading truth as defence and cross examining him on each of these issues,” Jaitley, a renowned lawyer, wrote on his Facebook page.

Kiran Reddy’s bouncer, min shunted

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy stirred a hornet’s nest on New Year’s Eve by stripping minister and Telangana loyalist D. Sridhar Babu of the legislative affairs portfolio and allocating it to staunch integrationist Dr S. Sailajanath.

In a late night development on Tuesday, the Chief Minister recommended the change of portfolios to Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan. The CM’s decision comes just before the state Assembly is be reconvened to “resume” debate on the AP Reorganisation Bill 2013, from January 3.

The ministry is very crucial at this juncture because the minister plays a decisive role in the running of the session.

Apparently to keep Sridhar Babu happy, the CM allocated commercial taxes in addition to civil supplies, which Sridhar Babu is handling.

The commercial taxes portfolio, the bread earner for the government, has been with successive Chief Ministers since 2009.

The CM created a new portfolio, “Language” (development), and allotted it to tourism minister Vatti Vasanth Kumar. Sources said this was done to make it appear that the changes were routine.

Once a trusted lieutenant of Kiran, Sridhar parted ways with him soon after the Congress Working Committee decided in favour of the T state. Lately, the two were at loggerheads over proroguing the Assembly and differences reached a peak in the just-concluded Assembly Session wherein Mr Sridhar announced that the Assembly had initiated the debate on the T Bill in contrast to the CM’s claims that the debate was yet to begin.

Kiran’s decision not democratic

Sources close to the Chief Minister said that he was upset with Sridhar Babu over the Assembly secretariat circulating a two-page “report on the decisions of the Business Advisory Committee” taken on December 17 to all MLAs. The report was issued in the name of the Chief Minister who, at a media conference, had feigned ignorance.

The Chief Minister’s decision is expected to evoke sharp criticism from within the Congress and outside and the Telangana ministers were already up in arms against the decision.

Senior Congress leader D. Srinivas described the Chief Minister’s decision as undemocratic and a timid act while Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao refused to attach any significance to it stating that proceedings in the Assembly were irrelevant to the state’s division as per the Constitution.

He cautioned millions of farmers in Seemandhra and Telangana regions of the serious consequences of division of the state.According to him, the bifurcation was done without addressing key issues of water, power and infrastructure, which could lead to deficit and bigger problems. According to him, the bifurcation was done without addressing key issues of water, power and infrastructure, which could lead to deficit and bigger problems. He fears the lapses in water distribution would erupt. In Andhra Pradesh, the dams located in one region serve the needs of other region. For example, Srisailam dam is located in Rayalaseema, but it serves the irrigation needs of Rayalaseema, Telangana and Andhra regions. So, Kiran is worried as how can that waters be shared. Telangana comprises 68 pc of the catchment area of the Krishna river and 79 pc catchment area of Godavari river. Utilising these resources for the development of the region will be a big challenge for the state.Andhra Pradesh's major rivers include Godavari, Krishna and Pennar. According to the Krishna tribunal award, Maharashtra gets 560 tmc feet of water, Karnataka 700 TMC and Andhra Pradesh 811 TMC.

We have high hopes on Bangalore: AAP

Bangalore: Kundan Singh, founder member of Aam Aadmi Party and coordinator of an awareness rally in the city on Sunday, spoke to Deccan Chronicle at length on the plans of the party in the Karnataka after its stupendous success in Delhi.

Also read: Prashant Bhushan meets VS Achuthanandan, seeks guidance

How was the response to the bike rally on Sunday?

We had sent out messages to all our members and volunteers through mail, Facebook and Twitter. We expected around 200 bikes, but we were surprised to see around 250 two-wheelers and 50 cars at the Freedom Park, the starting point. Around 600 people took part in the rally and many of them joined on the way as we went to different parts of the city. We had distributed data entry forms to all pillion riders, who collected basic information from the people who joined us on the way. We collected information from 2,000 people.

Is AAP’s strategy different in Bangalore, as compared to Delhi, to get the support of the people?

Most of the people in Bangalore are tech-savvy and connected online, and it is a big advantage. We have working committees in all the 28 assembly constituencies of the city. They have groups of aam aadmis who have taken the responsibility of leading the political revolution.

How is AAP planning to attract supporters?

We have started our membership drives in crowded areas, like malls, Metro stations and public places. Since all of us are working professionals, we make sure that we spend at least two to three hours every day for the party. To make people aware of the struggle against corruption, our volunteers have started performing street plays. As we have learned from Delhi elections, door-to-door campaign is the best way to connect with people and we have started it in all assemblies constituencies of the city, which traditional political parties do only 15 days before the elections.

How many new party members have joined in the city after the Delhi phenomenon?

We are conducting registrations in three ways: Our members go on drives to register people from public places using a Rs 10 membership form, we have offices in seven assemblies to register new people and registration through our website www.aapkarnataka.org. Since the Delhi elections, a large number of people are registering on our national website. As Karnataka was only the second state to have the highest number of donors, we believe that we have a large number of supporters here. The existing volunteer base of 12,000 has swelled to 20,000 plus after the Delhi results.

What are party's short-term and long-term goals in Bangalore?

We are not focused only on the 2014 elections. We have not yet decided on how many seats we could contest from in Karnataka, but we will go for maximum number of seats. We believe in the concept of Swaraj and we will form our manifesto based on the needs of the people when we go for door-to-door campaigning.

In Delhi, we had 70 manifestos for all 70 assembly constituencies and they were decided by the people from respective localities. In Bangalore, we have different segments of people, so we are working on categorising their problems and will finalise the manifestos later. We are trying to know what the people want and how we can work for it together.

How many techies have enrolled themselves into the party?

We have separate Facebook pages for different assembly constituencies. We have a separate Google group in each assembly constituency to communicate with each other on local events. We have named our BTM assembly Facebook page as Namma BTM, AAP Ka BTM. We have a separate Whatsapp group for each assembly constituency. We have a common Facebook page for the entire city, which is AAP Bangalore, and for the state, AAP Karnataka. We have Facebook pages for other districts too.

Is AAP targeting Bangalore after Delhi?

Besides a large number of people donating for AAP, a big group of volunteers from the state went to Delhi for campaigning. Data entry work, responding to mails and queries, web moderation, email moderation as well as offline support like writing post cards to Delhiites and calling campaign for Delhiites happened from Bangalore.

As Bangaloreans have already participated and supported AAP in Delhi elections, we hope that we will make this political revolution a huge success in the city.

How is the coordination happening between Delhi and Bangalore?

Party national executive members, like Prashanth Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, recently visited Bangalore after the Delhi elections to ensure that whatever happened in Delhi should repeat in Bangalore.

Crime file: Two teens charged for assault on Indian student in Australia; job seeker gets ‘spoofed’ by con, and more

Two teens charged for assault on Indian student in Australia

Melbourne: Two teenagers were on Tuesday charged with brutally attacking and robbing a 20-year-old Indian student in Australia who suffered serious head injuries in the incident.

Manrajwinder Singh from Reservoir remained in an induced coma in a hospital here after being bashed up by thugs early on Sunday.

Singh, in Australia to study accounts, was sitting with two other friends near the footpath east of Princess Bridge when they were approached by eight men, according to a police statement.

The offenders, perceived to be of African appearance, assaulted Singh by kicking him on the head and hitting him with a stick.

A 17-year-old Sydenham boy has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, robbery and theft, the Victoria police said in a statement. He faced an out of sessions court hearing today and has been remanded in custody to appear at a children's court on January 2.

Earlier, a 16 year-old St Albans boy was charged with serious assault and remanded in custody. The teen was recognised by Protective Services Officers (PSO) from media coverage of the incident, the statement said, adding the PSOs arrested the boy just before midnight at Sunshine Railway Station.

The third arrest in the case, a 15-year-old Ascot Vale boy has been released and is expected to be charged on summons. A search is on for five others believed to be involved in the incident.

The police have appealed to the public for any information to contact them. The incident was described as a cowardly attack by Detective Senior Constable Adam Foley.

"It was just an opportunistic target from the offenders, they've just seen them there and approached them and done what they've done," Foley said. Singh's brother Yadwinder Singh, meanwhile, pleaded for justice.

"They hit him on the head and he is in coma. I couldn't just believe it. My brother should get justice because he is fighting for his life," he said.
