US man arrested for stealing brains, selling them on eBay

David Charles allegedly stole more than 60 jars of brain and other human tissues in October from a warehouse space at the Indiana Medical History Museum. David Charles allegedly stole more than 60 jars of brain and other human tissues in October from a warehouse space at the Indiana Medical History Museum.

Chicago: A 21-year-old man has been arrested in the US for allegedly stealing brains of dead mental patients from a medical history museum and selling them on an online trading website.

David Charles allegedly stole more than 60 jars of brain and other human tissues in October from a warehouse space at the Indiana Medical History Museum, the Marion County prosecutor's office said in court papers on Thursday. He is accused of breaking into the museum and taking jars of brains and tissue from autopsies performed on patients in the 1890s, CNN reported.

Court documents said some jars were sold on eBay by a middleman, despite a company policy against listing 'humans, the human body, or any human body parts or products'.

A tipster who paid hundreds of dollars on the online auction site helped bring the 'organ entrepreneurism' to an end.

Indianapolis police had investigated several break-ins at the museum's storage facility before a California phone call led police to Charles. Authorities allege that Charles was scheming to sell some of them, according to court documents.

The alleged scheme began to unravel when the executive director of the museum, Mary Ellen Hennessey Nottage, received the call last month from a man in California who said he had purchased 'six jars of brain matter' for USD 600 on the trading site, according to court documents.

The man suspected the jars were stolen when he compared them to others on the museum website. Nottage notified the police.

Charles was arrested on December 16 after authorities organised an undercover sting. He faces charges of theft, marijuana possession and paraphernalia possession, according to court documents.

He is to appear at an Indianapolis court this month in connection with the alleged theft of dozens of jars of preserved human brain tissue valued at about USD 4,800.

Investigators also are looking into the possibility of additional charges, said A J Deer, a spokesman for the Marion County prosecutor's office.

The museum's executive director, in an interview with The Indianapolis Star, expressed dismay that anyone would steal the museum's artifacts.

Musharraf suffers heart attack, fails to appear before court

Islamabad: Former Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf today suffered a "severe heart attack" on his way to a special court to face high treason charges and was admitted to an army hospital, in another dramatic turn in the high-profile case.

Musharraf, 70, was summoned by the court to attend the hearing today after he failed to appear on previous two occasions citing security threats to his life as bombs were found on his route.

After the unexpected development, the court postponed the hearing till Monday. "The Court has exempted Musharraf from today's appearance due to his health conditions.

They have postponed the hearing till Monday," Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif told reporters outside the court. "No decision has been taken about the appearance of Musharraf on next hearing.

It will depend on his health condition and on advice of his doctors," Saif said. Asked if Musharraf would be taken abroad for treatment, he said, "we will wait for the doctor's opinion".

Replying to queries on Musharraf's name on the Exit Control List, he said the name has been put by the government. Aasia Ishaque, spokesperson of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party said, "He suffered a severe heart attack while he was on his way to the Court."

Musharraf was not feeling well last night and doctors had visited his Chak Shahzad farm house, given him medicines and advised bed rest, Ishaque said.

"While he (Musaharraf) was on his way to the Court today, he had chest pains and he was sweating. Tests done at the hospital showed he had suffered a heart attack," she told PTI.

Ishaque said the former president was admitted to the "Critical Care Unit" of the Armed Forces Institute for Cardiology in Rawalpindi (AFIC) and was conscious. Musharraf's wife was beside him and his 95-year-old mother called from Dubai but was not able to talk to him as doctors have not allowed anyone to talk to him, she said.

"We are sorry to inform that APML Quaid Pervez Musharraf suffered a heart attack on his way to the Court," Ishaque tweeted.

The former military ruler is accused of suspending, subverting and abrogating the constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.

He is the first general to face trial for treason. If convicted, he could get life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Outside the court, Musharraf's lawyer Ahmed Raza Kasuri said, "He wanted to come to the court but his health deteriorated suddenly and hence was rushed to Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology.

My God keep him well." Asked if Musharraf was afraid of court, Kasuri said, "He is a commando and a commando fights.

Musharraf's temperament is that he is not afraid." Musharraf has twice failed to appear before the court after bombs were found on his route and this was the third time he was unable to attend the hearing in the high treason case.

Earlier, Dr Raza Bokhari, Musharraf's international spokesperson said in a statement, "We can confirm that former president Musharraf is admitted in a military hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

He is conscious, oriented in time and space and is being examined by Pakistani military doctors. "We pray to Allah for his speedy and full recovery".

DIG Jan Mohammad informed the special court that Musharraf was rushed to AFIC after he complained of heart problem on the way to the court.

Musharraf left his sprawling Chak Shahzad farmhouse today but the long motorcade was diverted to the hospital midway.

High drama was witnessed at the special court where Musharraf's lawyer Anwar Mansoor staged a walk-out, citing lack of sleep over alleged disturbances outside the door of his residence.

"I was under total threat...from 1:00 am to 5 in the morning someone was ringing my bell," Mansoor told the court, adding he had never faced such an incident in his 40-year career.

The court promised to probe the incident but he walked off, followed by other members of Musharraf's legal team.

Musharraf was supposed to appear before the court in the high treason case that could put to test the relationship between an assertive civilian government and the powerful army.

Musharraf's legal team head Sharifuddin Pirzada alleged that chief prosecutor in the case Advocate Akram Shaikh had threatened him through Barrister Ibrahim Satti, who is another counsel for the former president.

The treason hearing against Musharraf resumed amid strict security arrangements in place from his farmhouse to the court premises and around it.

The security arrangements made over the expected arrival of the former president included mobile phone jammers, at least 1,000 police personnel, deployment of containers to cordon off traffic and bomb scanners.

The court had ordered Musharraf to appear before it today and also warned him of issuing a ruling, in case if he failed to appear.

Teams won't come due to terrorist syndrome: Former PCB chief

New Delhi: Former Pakistan Cricket Board chief Shahryar Khan today said that "terror syndrome" is preventing other countries to resume cricketing ties but a possibility is there that Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will tour in near future.

"Till the time there is terrorist syndrome in Pakistan, people will not come to play cricket there. Our effort is cool off or end the particular syndrome. All will not come..but there is a possibility that Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or Zimbawve would come. It is difficult for India because of the relationship," Khan said at the launch of his book 'Cricket Cauldron' here today.

"We want to come out of it slowly but all this depends on where this syndrome has reached. Our government is trying to talk to these people so that the situation improves. Will that happen or not, it is not clear as of now," Khan further added.

Salman Bashir, the Pakistan High Commissioner said,"We need to start giving priority to resuming cricketing contacts and then of course other things will become much more easier."

Union minister and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said,"Both countries are keen to resume the cricketing ties as but problem is that Pakistan needs to address the issue of security. Once they ensure the security of the foriegn players, then we would definitely like to visit Pakistan."

"We want that we should play in each other's soil and not in a third country. This is the policy which BCCI has adopted and I am hopeful and optimistic that soon Pakistan will address the issue once the venue is clear as far as security issues are there. The assessment has to come from that sid," Shukla added.

Shukla went onto add further that had the South Africa series been not cleared by the board, they would have thought of inviting Pakistan for a short series.

"Had we not gone to South Africa, we were going to invite Pakistan for a 15-day window. We had almost decided but SA tour was cleared. Whenever we look for an opportunity, we definitely invite Pakistan. We will certainly consider and I am always for resumption of cricketing ties

Khan on his part further added,"We are ready to come to India whenever there is a gap or window. We could come and play five ODIs..over a month or six weeks. I can tell you that because I am part of the board in Pakistan. We need to re-start India vs Pakistan series. This is vital. Even the ICC says that the India vs Pakistan matches are more important than the Ashes."

Banglore: Though cases of sexual abuse against children are being registered under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso) 2012, the State government has not set up special courts to try them even one year after the implementation of the Act.

The tardy attitude of the government has earned the ire of the Supreme Court, which has reportedly pulled up the State government for not setting up special courts to try cases under Pocso.

“The Supreme Court has asked us why we have not set up special courts to try Pocso cases and we have written to the Department of Women and Child Development on the issue. We are expecting a reply by next week,” said Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR), Umesh Aradhya. He added that in the absence of special courts these cases are being tried by the district courts.

According to sources in the Department of Women & Child Development (DWCD) district courts have been designated as courts to try these cases and there is one children’s court in Bengaluru in the civil court complex.

“We feel that the civil court complex is not a child sensitive area and hence the Department has decided to write to the High Court to set up a special court to try Pocso cases. The number of Pocso cases is on the rise and we need to set up special courts,” said a DWCD officer on condition of anonymity.

In response to the alarming number of sexual offences against children, the Centre had implemented Pocso in November 2012 to protect children from “sexual assault, sexual harassment, and pornography and provide for establishment of special courts for trial of such offences and for matters connected therewith.”

“Around 480 cases have been registered under Pocso Act between November 2012 and end October 2013 in Karnataka. But we do not have statistics on the number of cases, which may have been chargesheeted,” said the Co-ordinator of the Unicef-supported State-run gender sensitization project Roveena Bastian. According to the DWCD 178 cases were registered between November 2012 and June 2013.

Pocso is a gender neutral law. It gives detailed outline of all kinds of sexual offences and includes penetrative non penetrative, sexual innuendoes, showing pornography to children as cognizable crimes.

Wanderlust in Play

There’s a new trend emerging worldwide for the ultimate sports lover. The idea is simple, play a sport, watch a game in unimaginably energetic surrounds, and then take off on a trail of the land, exploring its cuisine, culture and the way of life.

Cricket coaches like Grant Flower and Heath Streak train you in Zimbabwe and South Africa, you can golf in Vietnam, train in cricket and rugby in Zimbabwe and undergo rigorous training in football in Spain or the UK.

Hopping on a jet, exploring a new vista and its sport has Ricky Leighton thrilled. He had an incredible experience with Sports Tours Africa. On a gap-year programme, he learnt more cricket while taking in the culture too. Meanwhile, Anthony Francis Payyapilli from Bengaluru is a youngster who is in Spain for a year, enrolled in the International  Soccer Academy of Madrid for training.

He says, “The training is intense with the focus on skills and strength. There’s exposure to high-quality football matches in the junior Spanish League too. At Seville, we played with one of the best professional Spanish teams and also got a chance to see the culture of a different part of Spain.”

His mother Rosy Payyapilli went to drop her son off and then took in the sights of Madrid while there.

“He also trained in the junior first division club, Alco Bendas. The boys are taken to different cities to train, and he recently visited Seville. But mostly, it’s all about rigorous practice sessions,” says Rosy. So far, Anthony has met a few players from Atlético Madrid like Koke and Diego Costa.

And now, back to Ricky Leighton from the UK, and his cricket dreams.

“The SPT programme was exactly what I was looking for. They offered coaching, umpiring and scoring training. I also did a fitness and nutrition course, umpired a regional match and scored in a first-class game,” says Ricky. He also had the opportunity to meet Test players and work with Grant Flower and Heath Streak.

The culture trip too was taken care of with visits to Harare, Bulawayo and Hwange, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

“I had a chance to walk with the lions. My experience was so inspirational that I have set up my own cricket business, encouraging people to go on the Sports Tours programmes. I can honestly say that without Sports Tours Africa, my own business, RML Cricket, would not exist,” Ricky adds.

Another businessman, Ajit Mohandas, from Bengaluru started Golf Tripz, which deals in customised packages offering golf lovers the best of courses and yes, culture.

With customers from Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, he says, “Since every course is unique, it depends on what the customer wants. We have packages where we combine cooking classes along with golf in Thailand, Vietnam and New Zealand. There are also many places in the coastal areas where we offer diving and golf combinations. The costs depend on the country, courses and time of the year. A package in Thailand for three to four days costs between Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 (excluding airfare). It’s all about playing golf with likeminded people. In Europe, for instance, they play three to four rounds of golf and take in the culture of the place too.”

And for Apurv Nagpal, corporate honcho-turned-author of Eighteen Plus, no holiday is complete without a sporty endeavour. He has travelled across the globe for cricket matches. Nagpal was at Lord’s when India chased down 325 with Yuvi and Kaif and also saw Ganguly taking off that t-shirt, He was there for the T20 World Cup in South Africa, where India won, at the 2003 cricket World Cup in England, where India lost to Pakistan, and then back again in England for the the T20 World Cup, (the last one).

“But I’ve also been to the last four soccer World Cups — France in 1998, South Korea, 2002, in Germany for 2006 and then in South  Africa for the 2010 tournament. And I’ve already got tickets to four matches in the second phase of ticket sales for Brazil 2014. I have booked the flights for the six of us (my family and parents),” reveals Apurv Nagpal.

As sports is such a large part of his itinerary, does he get time to explore? “My family loves to walk around, pick up a few words in the local language, try local cuisine, drink what the country drinks and more. During the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, we visited Johannesburg, Cape Town and then drove up all the way to Knysna, taking in ostrich farms, a safari, Sun City, StellenBosch (some of my favourite wines are found here), Paarl, Hermanus (a lovely seaside resort famous for its whale watching) and then finally to the Cape of Good Hope, where we saw penguins.”

But his most memorable football experience was in Germany, when his daughter was just over a year-old. He had to organise a baby sitter while they saw a game in Leipzig. “I remember waving an Indian flag during the match and getting quite a few amused looks — it was the France vs South Korea encounter,” he adds.

While Apurv could be among the world’s best sport spectators, Kanishk Saran, vice-president, SPT Sports Management Pvt Ltd is also one of those sport aficionados who prefers a bit of sport and travel together.

“My brother and I travelled to London and watched Chelsea against West Ham United a few years ago. It was an experience like no other. This was also why we started the concept of sports tourism under the SPT Sports Management umbrella. We have conducted trips to Spain and England where children can play against youth teams of clubs such as Real Madrid, Bournemouth Football Club (UK) and Portsmouth Football Club (UK). These are customised tours during summer holidays,” explains Kanishk.

Travel might open the mind, but this kind of travel gives one a perspective and skill to cherish, and now, who wouldn’t want that?

When asked if he would contest against Modi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Kalsariya said a decision regarding whether he would contest the elections and against whom would be decided by the party and he would go by that.

Amid his supporters wielding brooms and chants of "Aam Aadmi Zindabad," Kalsariya, a gynaecologist by profession, candidly admitted that he was about to join the Congress party just before joining AAP.

"I wanted to join the Congress party as there was no other option. I would have made a mistake had I done so. AAP is a symbol of people's power. And, they showed it in Delhi," he said.

"Gujarat has never got a third alternative apart from BJP and Congress. AAP, as a third political alternative, will turn a new chapter in Indian politics in 2014," he said. AAP claims to have registered 20,000 members offline and 50,000 members online across the state following the party's spectacular showing in the Assembly elections in Delhi, where the party won 28 of the 70 seats.

Retired IAS officer A R Bharadwaj, who was the director of Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute, also joined the Aam Aadmi Party. When asked why he had joined AAP, Bharadwaj said, "Throughout my professional career, I felt suffocated. If I did good work, I would be harassed. But, AAP is a people's party. Fatal fall for seventeen-year-old student

Bangalore: A 17-year-old first PU student died after he fell from the fifth floor of the college in which he was studying. The police are investigating whether it’s a suicide or an accidental fall.

The incident was reported at Sri Krishna International PU College in ITI Colony in Banashankari third stage in Chennammana Kere Acchukattu police station limits on Thursday evening. The deceased has been identified as Hemanth, a commerce student. He was the son of Jayarama, a mason, and Shantha, who reside in Katirguppe.

According to the police, Hemanth accidentally fell from the fifth floor of the college building around 5.30 pm on Thursday. He sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot. The college authorities rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. They also clarified that it was not a suicide but an accidental fall.

However, police sources said that there were not students around when the incident took place, as it happened in the evening. “It is said that some of his close friends saw him fall and there is information that he jumped from the fifth floor and committed suicide. He was reportedly in love with a girl for he last one year and she had ditched him three days ago. Further, she had also reportedly returned the gifts he had given her. Upset over this, he is said have committed suicide,” a source said.

Meanwhile, Hemanth’s father in his complaint has mentioned that it was an accidental fall. The police are waiting to question his friends to know the exact cause. “Due to his death, the college authorities had declared holiday on Friday. We will question his friends soon,” the police added. An unnatural death case is registered in this connection. Further investigations are on.

England promises tough competition for all teams in HWL Final

Hockey

New Delhi: Cautioning all the participating teams, England coach Bobby Crutchley today vowed to give a tough fight to all their opponents, including hosts India, in the inaugural Hero Hockey World League Final to be held here from January 10-18.

England will play hosts India in a Pool A fixture in their tournament opener at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Friday, but Crutchley rated Australia as the team to watch out for in the tournament.

"We are aiming at giving tough competition to all teams that we will be playing against (in the tournament). While all teams are good and strong but the toughest competition we feel will be Australia," he said after a practice session.

"During our practice sessions we are giving utmost emphasis on areas where we feel maximum errors will happen. We haven't come here with a set strategy in place, rather we will take each match on every given day," Crutchley added.

Apart from India and England, Germany and New Zealand are the other two teams in Pool A while the Pool B consists of Australia, Argentina, Netherlands and Belgium.

Daggubati couple may join BJP, says Venkaiah Naidu

D. Purandeswari.

Hyderabad: Significantly, there were speculations over an unnamed Union minister from the state who, according to veteran BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu, was willing to join the BJP.

The name of Union minister D. Purandeswari topped the guess list, given her husband Daggubati Venkateswara Rao’s brief stint in the party and continued relationship with the RSS.

“We thought it could be Purandeswari,” a senior BJP leader said, adding that the BJP was working hard to win the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat because of its pan-India electorate which, according to the party, is swayed by the Modi wave.

The BJP, sources said, will press for the Guntur Lok Sabha seat in case the alliance with the Telugu Desam comes through. Noted industrialist Prabhakar Chowdary of Nuzividu Seeds is already tipped to be the party candidate from Guntur. He made elaborate arrangements in Guntur recently for the BJP-sponsored ‘Run for Unity’.

“It is doubtful if the TD will concede both the Guntur and Narasaraopet seats from where Sambasiva Rao is hoping to try his luck,” said a senior TD leader.

Rajagopal set his eyes on Eluru as the TD categorically made it clear that it will not forgo Vijayawada from where he has won twice.

Nani of Kesineni Private Travels is the strong contender for the Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat.

Rajahmundry Congress MP Vundavilli Arun Kumar may not hav a vacancy in the BJP because the TD will not lose the seat to the alliance. Actor Murali Mohan who narrowly lost to Arun Kumar is keen on winning this time.

Pervez Musharraf says Pakistan army still backs him

Islamabad: Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, hemmed in by legal woes, has dismissed the notion that Pakistan's powerful army has abandoned him, saying the 6.5 lakh force was still with him.

"I have led my men at Brigadier level and as Chief. Ask the 6.5 lakh personnel," Musharraf said when asked if the Army had abandoned him.

He said he had led the army as a leader and not the commander.

"The real leadership is without the stars on your soldier. Remove it and then see if your men actually listen to you," Musharraf said in an interview to ARY news channel aired last night.

He said the 6.5 lakh-strong Army had not abandoned him. This was the second interview Musharraf gave to the news network.

In an earlier interview the 70-year-old had sought "forgiveness" for any wrongs he may have committed during his nine-year rule and said he will face all cases against him and not run like a coward. Asked about the negotiations with the Taliban and other militant groups, he said he supported it but "talks should be held from a position of strength".

He said talks are been held from a position of weakness. Musharraf is set to appear before a Special Court on January 1 on treason charges.

The special court was set up by the Nawaz Sharif government to try the former military ruler for high treason for suspending the constitution in 2007.

The former president is charged with abrogating, subverting, suspending, holding in abeyance and attempting to conspire against the 1973 Constitution by declaring emergency and overthrowing the superior judiciary in November 2007.

On November 17, the government decided to initiate treason proceedings against Musharraf, who came to power in 1999 by toppling a government led by Sharif and ruled till 2008 when he was forced to resign after being threatened with impeachment.

He lived in self-exile for about five years and returned to Pakistan in March to contest elections but was hauled to court in different cases, including one over the 2007 assassination for former premier Benazir Bhutto.

Musharraf has secured bail in four major cases against him but the trial for treason poses the biggest challenge to the former army commando.

This is the first time in Pakistan's history that a military ruler has been put on trial for treason.

If convicted, Musharraf could face life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 66-year history, has not commented on Musharraf's case. A Pakistani court on Monday said it was unable to lift a travel ban on Musharraf, who wanted to go abroad to meet his ailing mother.

The government said it was willing to bring Musharraf's 95-year-old mother from Dubai in a special aircraft or an air ambulance as a humanitarian gesture so that the two could be reunited.

The government also offered to provide her medical treatment. But Musharraf rejected "with thanks" the government's offer, saying he had enough resources to bring her back.

Congress takes a call dial R for Rahul

There are inherent hazards in writing an article on an active political leader. Universally, political leaders also face a fundamental danger of being constantly compared to immortal members of the political clan if she or he happens to have a good pedigree. In Rahul Gandhi’s case, comparisons have at times been drawn with his father, his grandmother, and great grandfather.

Being the fifth generation of the family that has at times been considered and projected as the ‘First Family’ of Indian politics by sycophantic apparatchiks of the party, Rahul Gandhi has had failure as a constant companion, partly because the times are so loaded against him and also because of his own limitations. But all instances of fiasco that have been apportioned to Rahul have not always been his doing. To be fair to Rahul, he has not been allowed to be his own man. It is a different matter that there is little clarity still regarding the kind of man he wishes to be.

Like his father, Rahul Gandhi was a reluctant entrant to politics. Just like his father would have preferred his space in another setting, Rahul would have liked a small alcove in the Caribbean Sea or some other place of choice. But while Indira Gandhi’s assassination transformed Rajiv Gandhi overnight, in Rahul’s case, the continuing presence of his mother has been an impediment. A couple of years ago, when Sonia Gandhi suddenly went abroad for an undisclosed medical condition, a mechanism was created to put Rahul Gandhi in the driver’s seat. But with the crisis ebbing, his elevation as party commander got stuck. He displayed indications of wanting to take charge, but found little support from the old guard of the party.

It already was bad enough that the United Progressive Alliance had a dual power structure, with the Prime Minister and the Congress president often pulling the cart in two opposite directions. This was compounded by parallel power structures in the Congress party – the old guard and the Rahul brigade, those manning corporate-style ‘war rooms’. As a result, even while Rahul Gandhi was leading the campaign in the recent assembly polls in five states, the old guard was waging a smear campaign.  The effort just went into over-drive the moment the verdict went against the Congress party.

The problem is that Sonia Gandhi has worked her way with one set of power hierarchies and this, led by Ahmed Patel, her political secretary, got threatened. This group was essentially insecure about the rise of Rahul since 2004, when he entered the electoral fray. Their anxiety stemmed from the knowledge that new leaders invariably build new power structures around them: Indira Gandhi did so, and so did his father, Rajiv. The old guard stands to lose with Rahul’s emergence, and thus kept throwing in a spanner or two.

The problem with the Congress party is that it believed in 2009 that the party had won the 2014 election as well. As a result, the party became lazy and allowed the government to let matters slip to the point of no-return on several counts. As far as Rahul was concerned, he began on an over-ambitious note trying to regain Uttar Pradesh – a state where Congress has not won state elections since 1984. He thought that it would be easy to politically regain the territory by a few padyatras and roadshows. Perhaps a less daunting target would have been strategically better and not result in the humiliation he suffered when Congress came a cropper in the 2012 assembly elections.

The latest verbal pyrotechnics by Rahul, over the Ordinance that sought to protect tainted politicians, began on a note of the party becoming a bystander to a leader who was moving to take charge brutally. But eventually, Rahul fell by the wayside and did not push matters to its logical end. This once again demonstrated that both Rahul and his mother had a common trait: Often they would go just half way up the tree and not the complete distance. In politics, this does not work, and ruthlessness is often the need of the hour.

The year 2014 begins on a note with Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party having little or no expectations from the year. The year has also begun with little expectation from Rahul. The much-hyped Modi vs Rahul presidential style campaign has come a cropper even before it could take off on in real earnest. In the election year, there is probably not a single state where the party is comfortably placed. Karnataka is probably the best bet for the party for a respectable performance, but the state accounts for just about five percent of the strength of the Lok Sabha.

In the cyclical path of its development, the Congress party started entering a low trough from the winter of 2009. It will probably enter the lowest point in 2014. This year will mark a decade of Rahul Gandhi being in politics. The balance-sheet of this decade in public life will be drawn up in a year from now. It will depend on which of the trajectories Rahul Gandhi opts for.

The first would be to give in to the old guard in the party and hope that the strategy they opt for prevents complete decimation of the party. The second option would be to continue assuming control of the party, but this would mean telling his mother that he has to run things his way. However, this path would mean entering the fray in 2014 with the clear assumption of sitting in the Opposition, because Rahul Gandhi talks of a long-term vision, nothing in the immediate run. The third option is, of course, always there: take a long walk and vacate the space for others in the family or organisation. The choice is his!

Yet, there are many commonalities that are often ignored. Modi is an acclaimed orator, Rahul is still learning the tactics of mass appeal, which he is yet to catch beyond his dimpled smile. Almost all the time, it is the Newton's theory that works between them. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Already in poll mode, Rahul wanted to try a slogan and that came on September 11 at a rally in tribal-dominated Udaipur. Days later, Rahul reworked on the earlier poll quote in this way. And do you know how Modi reacted to it?At a rally in Jhansi in UP on Oct 25, Modi told the gathering: "If you give BJP even 60 months, we will change the face & fate of the nation."They both think differently. How? Modi demonstrated to college students by holding up a glass of water. Can anyone link physics to politics. Rahul did at a dalit meet. He told them to take on BSP supremo Mayawati, who is blocking their welfare. "If you want to go to space, your velocity has to bee 11 km/sec, but for Jupiter you need 60km/sec," he said While Modi, 62, has to his credit winning three assembly polls and has had administrative experience since 2001, Rahul, 42, has not held any government post since entering the Lok Sabha in 2014.Rahul is a priviledged 'prince' with the brand name of Gandhi while Modi's is a journey of struggle to the top. Both like their speeches to have a technology tinge. And Rahul said, "If India is computer, Congress its default program."Modi began as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh pracharak and gradually moved up the ranks in the BJP while Gandhi is been groomed under the patronage of the country's oldest party. The BJP likes to call it 'dynasty versus meritocracy' and the Congress wants to name it as the secular versus communal fight. While Rahul takes solace in 'Mere paas maa hai' (My mom is with me) kind of speeches, often referring to intiatives taken up by congress supremo and his mother Sonia Gandhi, Modi can endlessly talk about how he has made Gujarat a model state. Modi's humble growth up the ladder has got him an identity as a middle-class icon while Rahul speaks extensively of welfare of the backward class. Modi is emerging a favourite among the youths for his talks focused on India's growth, Rahul claims to provide a new identity for the youth brigade. While Modi was named the BJP's central poll campaign committee head in June 2013, months before that in November 2012 Rahul Gandhi was picked to head the Congress election coordination committee. This happened two months before Gandhi was made the AICC vice president, the second-in-command in the party after his mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi. Unlike Modi, who had to face opposition from his senior party leaders, Rahul's ascension was unanimous choice of the party. As for more similarities other than dressing, both shoulder the responsibility of victory of their parties in the forthcoming elections.

Reshaping oil politics amid turmoil

Since the commencement of the Arab Spring three years ago, the Arab world has witnessed extraordinary developments – the fall of four potentates who had ruled their countries for several decades; Saudi Arabia’s abandonment of its quietist foreign policy approach in favour of aggressive sectarian and strategic confrontations against Iran in theatres across the region; the extraordinary violence and bloodletting in Syria, and now the sudden and unexpected thaw in US-Iran relations. Separately, massive increases in US production of unconventional oil and gas, described as the “shale revolution”, now promise to qualitatively change the global energy scenario.

Saudi-Iranian estrangement originates in concerns relating to the impact of the Arab Spring in effecting political change in Bahrain, a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member. Viewing political reform in Bahrain as a precursor to similar demands in other neighbouring countries, as also concerns that this would further empower the Shias, Saudi Arabia has blamed Iran for “interference” in GCC affairs, accusing it of pursuing “Persian” and sectarian hegemony in the region. This competition is being played out in Syria where historic, religious, ethnic, sectarian, and strategic faultlines have engulfed the nation in an orgy of violence that has killed over 100,000 people and destroyed ancient cities and sacred shrines. Numerous warring militia, with secular, Salafi and extremist affiliations, are engaged in battles as fierce amongst themselves as against the national forces loyal to President Bashar Al Assad. Outside role-players, such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran, are actively supporting different groups, with Israel carrying out air attacks to destroy Al-Assad’s capabilities and supplies to the Hezbollah.

In this scenario of deep hostility, the dramatic US-Iran détente is a real game-changer. It has brought together on a common platform two countries that have been deeply estranged for over three decades, with the US leading the enforcement of far-reaching sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy and effectively made it a pariah state. Now, Iran is poised to emerge as a legitimate and significant player in regional affairs.

Not surprisingly, this thaw has left Saudi Arabia and Israel bewildered and insecure. This is because, while the US and its western allies have been primarily concerned about Iran’s nuclear programme, in West Asia itself there have been more immediate concerns: for Israel, the threat from Hezbollah and Syria, and for Saudi Arabia, the security and ideological competition it faces from its northern neighbour. With the bogey of the “existential” Iranian threat receding from the region, both countries will now have to address issues they have long ignored: Israel will have to revive and participate constructively in the peace process, while Saudi Arabia will be compelled to look at domestic political, economic and social reform. Saudi concerns are aggravated by the fact that, with the shale revolution and increasing fuel-efficiencies, the US may dilute its involvement in Gulf affairs.

Of course, there is considerable hype about the impact of the hydrocarbon production from shale, with suggestions that it would lead to the US’s “energy independence” and dilute the importance of the principal oil-producers. Much of this is misconceived: the US will remain import-dependent to the extent of nearly 40 per cent even in 2035. Again, there is considerable uncertainty about the quantum of US unconventional production in the medium and long-term, leading observers to suggest that US shale oil production be seen as a “surge”, not a revolution. In any case, US production will decline from the 2020s.

During the next 10-15 years, as the US reduces its oil imports, most of the Gulf production will shift to Asia. The Asian giants – China, Japan, Korea and India – will depend on Gulf supplies to the extent of 60-90 per cent, while around 90 per cent of Gulf production will go to Asia.

These developments in the political and energy scenario have important implications for India. Besides energy links, the Asian giants have developed very substantial trade and investment connectivities with the Gulf countries: the GCC is India’s number one trade partner among economic groupings, and is home to over six million Indians who send back to India $35 billion annually. Besides benefiting from high-value two-way trade, the other Asian countries are also executing multi-billion dollar projects in the region. Again, outside the GCC, these Asian countries not only have important energy-related links with Iran and Iraq, for China and India ties with Iran have an important strategic value in terms of India’s interests in Afghanistan and Central Asia, and China’s energy and political ties with the Central Asian republics and Russia.

Iraq, with the steady development of its oil infrastructure, is poised to become a major global oil producer, possibly even reaching production of 6-8 million barrels per day in a couple of decades. Most of this oil will find its way to Asian markets. In short, the security and stability of the Gulf and West Asia are crucial for the long-term interests of the Asian countries. This calls for a review of the Asian security role in the Gulf.

For far too long, the Asian giants have pursued only their economic interests in the region, while the US has been responsible for regional security. This, it has done by maintaining its political and military hegemony, marked by periodic armed interventions that have wreaked havoc in the countries concerned and encouraged the proliferation of radical elements. It has also stultified the political evolution of the countries in the region, leaving their people frustrated and angry at their marginalisation in domestic, regional and world affairs. Given declining Western interests and capabilities and the crucial interest of the Asian giants in regional security, this is now a propitious moment for Asian countries to define and pursue a new security architecture in the region that would be inclusive and cooperative, one in which hegemony would be replaced by accommodation and consensus.

The challenges in realising this alternative arrangement are serious, for they would require the principal regional role-players to give up their present postures of confrontation and hostility, and engage with erstwhile enemies on the same platform for dialogue, establishment of confidence-building measures, and addressing of issues that divide them in a free and frank environment. Before this, the four principal Asian countries would themselves have to develop the habit of dialogue and pursuit of consensus, a daunting task since Asian countries have little experience of strategic dialogue with each other on continental issues. This may be difficult, but not impossible.

The pursuit of a cooperative security arrangement in the Gulf in tandem with diverse Asian allies will be an important challenge for Indian diplomacy in the coming years, for its success will be central to the realisation of this century as the ‘Asian Century’.

Saturn's rings revealed to be 4.4 billion years old

Washington: Saturn's iconic rings likely formed about 4.4 billion years ago, shortly after the planet itself took shape, researchers say.

The origin of Saturn's ring system has long been the subject of debate, with some researchers arguing that it's a relatively young structure and others holding that it coalesced long ago, at roughly the same time as the gas giant's many satellites.

At the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, researchers said that the new study, which was conducted using data gathered by NASA's Saturn-orbiting Cassini spacecraft, strongly supports the latter scenario.

Cassini's measurements imply that "the main rings would be [extremely] old, rather than hundreds of millions of years old," Fox News quoted Sascha Kempf, of the University of Colorado in Boulder, as saying.

Saturn's main ring system is huge but razor-thin, measuring about 175,000 miles across but just 33 feet or so in the vertical direction. The rings are composed primarily of water ice, but they contain small amounts of rocky material contributed by micrometeoroid bombardment.

Kempf and his colleagues used Cassini's Cosmic Dust Analyzer instrument to measure just how frequently such tiny particles cruise through the Saturn system.

They found that a surprisingly small amount of dusty material comes into contact with the rings. On an average, just 10-19 g of dust per square centimeter zooms through space every second at a distance of five to 50 Saturn radii from the planet.

Having measured this low rate of dust recruitment, the team then calculated that the rings have likely existed for about 4.4 billion years.

Kempf and his colleagues were also able to reconstruct the orbits of many of these particles, finding that the lion's share likely come from the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy bodies beyond Neptune's orbit.

However, some of the dust probably hails from the even more distant Oort Cloud and some from interstellar space, Kempf said.

More pain to come for shattered England, says Andy Flower

Sydney: Coach Andy Flower warned today there was more pain to come in the wake of England's Ashes series meltdown in Australia.

Australia completed a 5-0 clean sweep on Sunday, routing the hapless tourists for 166 off just 31.4 overs to carry off a 281-run victory in three days in the Sydney Test. Such was the magnitude of the series defeat that major ramifications are expected for English cricket, just months after they beat Australia 3-0 in England.

Flower said he would not identify individual players facing the chop, with reports that high-profile batsman Kevin Pietersen, one of the big English failures in the series, was under pressure. Pietersen, who averages just over 47 in 104 Tests, was dismissed for three and six in the final Test to finish with 294 runs in the series at 29.40.

Flower, who has said he will not be standing down as team coach, said he was prepared to make tough decisions, while admitting the nightmare series was the end of an era. Asked directly whether Pietersen would be part of England's future, Flower told reporters: "This will be a new start, and so it should be.

"It does feel like the end of some type of era. We might have to take a little more pain before we have sustained success again. And we might have to ask for a little patience in that regard over the coming months."

As well as speculation over the future of Pietersen, 31-year-old wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who was dropped for the last two Tests, could also face the axe. "I'm not going to discuss individuals, but looking at it a little more holistically, I think it will be the start of something new," Flower said. "I think Alastair Cook as captain can lead that renewal and rebuilding (of) the England cricket side.

"We're not proud of (the Sydney Test). And we're not proud of the Test series result, of course. "It's quite a bitter pill to swallow. But that's what it is and we have to face up to that reality."

England have five months before they host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series, by which time a full review into the Australia debacle is expected to be completed. Cook said after the Sydney defeat that he knows what it takes to rebuild shattered England.

He said he has been given a vote of confidence from the England and Wales Cricket Board to continue as captain as England look to regroup after sliding to fourth in the International Cricket Council rankings, below Australia at three. "I am desperate to try and turn it around. I feel as if I am the right man to do it," he said at his post-match conference.

"If I'm not and people higher up want a change because they think that's the best way, I have to take it on the chin."

Cook had a wretched series, scoring just 246 runs at 24.60 after being the man of the last series in Australia in 2010/11, when he amassed 766 runs at 127.66. Leading spinner Graeme Swann announced his retirement midway through the series, while number three batsman Jonathan Trott returned home after the first Test suffering from stress.
